Killing Time with Spiritual Activity
The other day, my wife and I had a medical appointment to go to. Before we left the house, my wife asked me if I wanted to bring a book along with me. She informed me that the appointment could take a while. I said that I didn't need to bring a book and that I had my phone with me anyway.
Now most people use their phones to kill time with things that are inherently entertaining. They'll watch videos, scroll through social media, read news articles, etc. I already had a game plan in mind with how I was going to use my phone during the wait time. I had decided that I was going to read Scripture on my phone.
After over a year of discovering different ways to spend time connecting with the Lord every day, I'm starting to come to a place where I'm constantly thinking about it. It's becoming a normal part of me—like second nature. I'm always trying to find creative ways to connect with God in the middle of my busy schedule. And it's helping me draw closer to Christ throughout my day. I think about Jesus more often and I rely on the Holy Spirit's power more and more. But the key is this: I have to be really intentional about it. It's so easy, especially with a phone, to just do things that are more "entertaining."
So, there I was at the clinic with my phone in hand. I turned to the Bible app and managed to read four interesting chapters of the Bible before being called into our appointment. Using the wait time at the medical appointment was a simple and easy way for me to accomplish one of my daily goals: read a certain amount of Scripture per day (I read about 7 passages each day).
As you keep practicing finding creative ways to connect with God throughout the day, you might discover one day that it has become second nature. You'll start to constantly think about where you can include prayer, Scripture, worship, and contemplation throughout your day. Just be intentional and as creative as you can in how you commune with God each and every day.
