Ancient Christian Wisdom
for Everyday Life
Wisdom for those with the wild ambition of getting as close to Jesus as they can on earth and living the kind of life that God desires every single day
Welcome to the Daily Monastic. I’m Barnabas the Monastic.
I have a wild ambition in life: get as close to the Lord Jesus Christ as I can while on earth. I attempt to do that by learning to become a modern monastic. I explore and integrate ancient Christian monk wisdom in my modern everyday life. I write about it here. Feel free to write to me about your own journey. I currently reside in the “Great White North.”
Have Strategic Breaks
Here's a tip: don't try to go intense every single day. I've found this tip useful for a wide variety of stuff in life. If a person does things intensely every single day, there's a high chance of them burning out and quitting the activity involved altogether.
Killing Time with Spiritual Activity
The other day, my wife and I had a medical appointment to go to. Before we left the house, my wife asked me if I wanted to bring a book along with me. She informed me that the appointment could take a while. I said that I didn't need to bring a book and that I had my phone with me anyway. Now most people use their phones to kill time with things that are inherently entertaining. They'll watch…
Rituals
I use rituals to help cultivate my spiritual life. Rituals are simply activities a person does on a regular and consistent basis. Having a coffee every morning at 9 AM can be considered a ritual. Brushing your teeth before bedtime can be considered a ritual. Reading a book to your child before they sleep can be considered a ritual. We have rituals for…
Adding Fake Candles
I bought some fake LED candles the other day. I use them to enhance the space that I'm in when I'm praying to God. I particularly like to pray on the floor with a prayer mat. The battery-operated candles are a nice addition to make the space more conducive for prayer. I find that they simply enhance the atmosphere.
Exercise
One of the simplest (but hardest) ways to take care of our bodies is by exercising. We're called to steward our bodies as best as we can so that we can use them well for God's Kingdom purposes. God designed our bodies to move and to derive physical benefits from constant movement. Regular physical exercise can…
Journaling Tip: Write Less
For a long time, I resisted the practice of journaling. The reason for my reluctance was simple: I believed that I had to journal in a very particular way. And if I didn't do it that way, it wasn't considered journaling.
Have Pen and Paper by Your Side
I try to engage in a time of stillness and meditation every day. My main goal when practicing stillness is to increase my awareness of God. I attempt to perceive God for who He really is in my life. At the same time, I hope to cultivate personal humility by decreasing my view of myself. I hope to…
Pray for Someone’s Protection and Spirituality
At times, I don't know what to specifically pray about for other people. I try to pray for multiple people like family and friends every day. But for one reason or another, I may not know what to specifically pray about. It's usually because…
Some is Better than None
There are times when I don't feel very motivated to do important and productive things. These significant things could include exercising, writing, cleaning, reading, and spiritual activities like praying or reading the Bible. The lack of motivation could be because I had a really long day and I just want to "veg out" on the couch. Or it…
Using a Prayer Mat
I sometimes use objects to support me in my regular prayer habit. One of these objects is a prayer mat that I've had for many years. Although it's not a common practice for Christians to use prayer mats, it's not entirely unheard of either. Christians have been known to…
